Until 1973, the OSAA had only 2 sports seasons: Fall & Spring.
HS Swimming season was in the Fall, during the current water polo season.
Mike Carey, the swim coach at Sunset, started HS water polo with the help of Garland Trizinca.
Mike convinced the North Bend swim coach to bring a team to Portland St. for this one game.
Mike Carey has retired from Westview, but we need to ask him how this all began.
Per Rod Harmon, the Beaverton schools had been running intramural water polo for years.
Per the 1990 State program:
"The development of Oregon High School water polo has come a long way
since the first championships in the spring of 1971. That first High
School Championship was organized by Mike Carey of Sunset HS.
The Sunset squad defeated North Bend at the Portland State University
pool in the only high schol match of the season."
